DESCRIPTION:
Sandstone is the result of sand, rich in quartz and other minerals, being compacted and over a long period of time, cemented into a rock like material that is combined with calcium carbonate, silica, and iron oxide. Sandstone usually consists of quartz, but it can sometimes be made up of other kinds of minerals. Sandstone can be found in different colors including brown, red, yellow, and gray.
COMMONLY FOUND:
Sandstone can be found in a number of places in the world. Red sandstone is commonly found in the southwest and western parts of England, Wales, and also in areas of Europe, and Mongolia. Other forms of sandstone can be found in Italy Egypt, India, the Appalachian mountains, and the region of Montana.
INTERESTING FACTS:
After the Civil War, it was common to see homes in cities like New York, and Boston bricked with Brownstone (a form of sandstone). Brownstone is the result of millions of years of intense pressure combined with iron-oxide to give it a brownish color.
